Media-Savvy Young Generation Controlling or Being Controlled?
This is a Response to the Brain Rot wikithon
Assalamualaikum wr wb, let me introduce myself, I am Ahmad Baihaqi, here I would like to give my opinion on how we can reduce the negative impact of digital media that causes brain damage for the younger generation, or called brain rot Previously, what is brain rot? Brain rot is a term used by people for "brain decay" or a decrease in brain quality, due to the negative effects of low-quality social media that affects human activities and thinking power that can harm ourselves and even others
Why can this be detrimental? Because being too busy with the virtual world makes us less interact directly with friends or family, which makes us lonely with the real world, if it's like this, how do we overcome it?
In my opinion, to reduce the negative impact of digital media on the younger generation, we need a balanced approach between education, supervision, and healthy habits in using technology. Here are some efforts that can be made:
1. digital literacy, including how to filter information, recognize hoaxes, and understand the psychological impact of social media. And increase awareness about the positive and useful use of social media for our future. And we must increase self-awareness and clear planning in its use. By understanding its impact, individuals can direct digital media to productive goals. After that, apply open communication about the risks and benefits of digital media without controlling it too tightly. And an example of the use of healthy and beneficial digital media, for example if someone wants to build a career or business, then digital media can be used for marketing strategies and building personal branding. After self-awareness is formed, then we must increase digital literacy so that individuals have the skills to use digital media wisely. The next step is to apply it in everyday life consistently by limiting excessive consumption of entertainment content and using digital media. Especially children under 5 years old, just so you know that the effects of gadget addiction are difficult to eliminate, especially if it is fatal, if possible, toddlers are taught good things such as reciting the Koran or how to pray. Because children tend to imitate the habits of adults around them.
2. Use the screen time feature or applications that help control the length of digital media use. And Recommend digital detox or dopamine detoxification, a method to reduce dependence on instant gratification by limiting or avoiding activities that stimulate excessive dopamine spikes such as endless scrolling of excessive entertainment content. And by not using it before bed or having screen-free time on the weekends can help reduce these adverse effects by limiting exposure to damaging content and giving the brain a chance to rest and recover.
3. Encourage the younger generation to do more activities in the real world, what is that like? Examples Doing our hobbies or other activities such as playing music, practicing dancing or going hiking with friends or family, exercising, or communities/organizations and extracurriculars if at school. And Invite them to participate in discussions or activities that involve direct communication, not just via chat or social media. This is a real example that I often encounter many people around me who are addicted to even being carried away by the negative atmosphere on social media into the real world which is difficult to handle after a long time he began to realize it and saw his busy environment in an extracurricular at school and organization and he began to dare to try it, namely joining the activity and as a result he managed to reduce and avoid brain rot
The point is, the one who controls it is us, not other people, let alone gadgets, so digital media is not the enemy, but it must be used wisely. The good and bad of something depends on ourselves. The balance between entertainment and productive activities is the main key to keeping the brain sharp and the younger generation can still use technology without experiencing negative effects such as addiction or brain rot.- Affiliation
