Reduce plastic waste

From BASAkalimantanWiki

Young people voiced their responses to the question:
How can you reduce plastic waste for the sustainability of our planet?

The balance of the environment is currently threatened by climate change, pollution, and ecosystem damage. One of the most pressing issues is the uncontrolled plastic waste. Therefore, this public participation Wikithon themed on reducing plastic waste aims to raise public awareness, especially among the younger generation, about the importance of plastic waste management, encourage young people to participate in plastic waste management, and create innovative solutions to reduce plastic waste.

The research initiated by BASAkalimantan Wiki through Dialog #1 and Dialog #2 involved government agencies, environmental communities, and young people to find solutions to plastic waste issues and the "one hand one tumbler" campaign. This dialogue was based on the results of a Wikithon held earlier to gather young people's opinions on this theme. Banjarbaru City, after becoming the capital of South Kalimantan province, experienced an increase in waste volume from 125-130 tons per day to 150 tons per day. Of this amount, 53% is disposed of at the Banjarbakula Regional Landfill and 47% at the Hutan Panjang Landfill. Efforts to reduce plastic waste are carried out through Mayor Regulation Number 66 of 2016, which prohibits the use of plastic bags in retail stores and minimarkets, as well as through waste banks and TPS3R (reduce-reuse-recycle waste processing centers). Public awareness to reduce plastic waste is still minimal, and socialization related to plastic waste issues is considered ineffective. The impact is that high waste production makes the city dirty and affects health, as well as increasing the amount of waste in landfills. Recommendations resulting from this dialogue include comprehensive socialization and campaigns related to plastic waste issues in various places, optimizing support such as waste transportation and waste banks, and involving environmental communities and young people in socialization and campaign actions.

BASAkalimantan Wiki held two significant events in Banjarbaru, with the first on November 13, 2024, at KALA Cafe, focusing on "Youth Innovation in Reducing Plastic Waste," where participants discussed public policy formulation and celebrated the winners of the Public Participation Wikithon, with hopes expressed by Program Coordinator Hudan Noor and Acting Mayor Dra. Nurliani for policy implementation and increased awareness; the second event on December 19, 2024, involved young people in drafting policies on plastic waste, dividing participants into groups to recommend solutions such as environmental outreach, cleanliness information boards, and waste banks, with the government committing to making Banjarbaru a Waste Bank City and promoting the "one hand one tumbler" campaign, and all recommendations to be processed into a policy brief for multi-stakeholder discussions to ensure transparency, accountability, and public input.

As a result of the Policy Dialogue, young people and government agreed to implement the following measures. The measures includes evaluation and compliance components:
