Brain Rot Due to Endless Scrolling : When the Brain Becomes Dull Due to Excessive Content Consumption

Brain rot is a term that describes a condition in which the brain feels "dull" due to consuming too much light and instant content, such as short videos, memes, or sensational news on social media. This condition often causes difficulty focusing, decreased memory, and reduced critical and creative thinking skills.

Endless scrolling, or doomscrolling, is the habit of continuously scrolling the screen without a clear purpose, often unconsciously. Here are the impacts of this habit on the brain:

1. Reduces Attention Span Short content that changes quickly makes the brain accustomed to instant gratification, making it difficult to focus on more complex tasks or read more in-depth information.

2. Reduces Critical Thinking Skills Consuming too much shallow information makes us rarely analyze or question things in depth.

3. Weakens Memory Information that comes in too quickly without being processed properly makes it difficult for us to remember or understand something in the long term.

4. Increase Dopamine Addiction Social media and short-form content give the brain an instant “dopamine hit,” which makes us continue to seek quick pleasure and lazy to do activities that require more effort.

5. Reduce Productivity and Creativity The habit of endless scrolling wastes time without realizing it, reducing the opportunity to think creatively or do more useful activities.

How to Prevent Brain Rot Due to Excessive Scrolling

1. Create Time Limits – Use a timer or app limit feature to control scrolling time. 2. Increase Consumption of Quality Content – Divert attention to books, long articles, or educational videos. 3. Practice Digital Detox – Try taking a break from social media for a few hours or even a whole day. 4. Use Social Media Consciously – Before scrolling, ask yourself if there is a purpose or is it just a habit. 5. Replace it with Other Activities – Do more productive activities such as reading, writing, or exercising.

In conclusion, the habit of endless scrolling can cause brain rot which makes it harder for the brain to focus, think deeply, and be creative. With awareness and good management, we can prevent these negative effects and restore optimal brain function.
